Open to all skill levels. No prior glaze chemistry experience is required.
Join internationally respected ceramic artist and glaze educator John Britt for an immersive three-day workshop exploring cone 6 and mid-fire glazes through practical testing, demonstrations, and discussion. Designed for potters who want to move beyond guesswork, this workshop focuses on understanding how glazes work, how firing affects results, and how to confidently test, adjust, and troubleshoot glaze recipes.
Topics include:
- Kilns, cones, and firing dynamics
- Silica, alumina, and flux relationships
- Mid-fire glaze families including celadon, temmoku, glossy, satin, and matte surfaces
- Avoid and troubleshoot common glaze faults including crazing, crawling, blistering, pin-holing, and running
- Colour development and testing methods
- Practical glaze chemistry explained in an approachable way
- Building and refining a personal or studio glaze palette
This is a highly hands-on workshop. Participants will learn accurate measuring and mixing techniques, mix and test glaze variations, apply glazes to provided test tiles, and participate in collaborative testing analysis. Participants will contribute to a shared body of glaze testing, creating a broader reference library than any individual could produce alone. Participants will leave with fired test tiles, glaze recipes, testing data, notes, and practical methods for future studio work.
Whether you are new to glaze mixing or already developing your own surfaces, this workshop is designed to build practical understanding and confidence.

About John Britt
John Britt is a studio potter, author, researcher, and teacher with more than 40 years of experience teaching glaze chemistry and ceramics internationally. Based in Bakersville, North Carolina, John is widely known for making glaze chemistry understandable, practical, and engaging. His workshops combine technical depth with experimentation, humour, and practical studio application.
He is the author of:

- The Complete Guide to High-Fire Glazes
Participants are welcome to bring personal copies of John’s books for signing during the workshop.
John has also written for Ceramics Monthly and Studio Potter, and previously served as Clay Coordinator and Studio Manager at Penland School of Craft.

Participant Supply List: Required
- OSHA-approved P100 respirator, N95/N100 dust mask, or equivalent
- Large labelled zip-lock bag for mask storage
- Notebook, pen, and Sharpie marker
- Digital scale accurate to 0.1 grams (1 scale per two participants). Accuracy is essential and scales MUST be tested prior to the workshop (Many are not accurate!).
- Immersion blender with mixing end small enough to fit inside a standard Solo cup
- Small scoop or measuring spoon
- One 1- or 2-gallon bucket (clean)
- Comfortable studio clothing and closed-toe shoes
